National Nutrition Month: Food Connects Us
Written by Lillian Groff, dietetic intern
Each year, March is National Nutrition Month. During this month, people are invited to learn about making educated food choices, developing healthy eating habits, and engaging in physical activity. This year's theme put on by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is “Food Connects Us.” This stems from the idea that food is a way to connect with other people through food. This may mean sharing a meal to learn about the meal's preparation, the ingredients, even who made the meal. Many traditions come from food, allowing us to connect with others during events or celebrations.
Ways to Celebrate National Nutrition Month
1. Cook a new meal with friends or family
2. Do a recipe swap with coworkers or friends to highlight your favorite recipe to
share with others
3. Host a potluck where each person brings a dish that holds personal or cultural
significance
4. Plan to eat more meals with family or friends during the month of March
5. Try new recipes that use herbs or spices from different cultures
6. Practice mindful eating and limit screen time during meal time to help connect
more with family at mealtime
The Longevity Diet
The Longevity Diet by Dr. Longo focuses on whole foods based on areas where
longevity is present. It also focuses on selecting ingredients that our ancestors would
have eaten. These foods can aid in digestion and food sensitivities. Understanding our heritage and what foods would have been available to our ancestors is a way to allow food to connect us. If we each discover what our ancestors consumed, it can create a sense of connection and community to know we are diving into our heritage.
